Pay-By-Plate is an alternative payment system where you register your license plate and tolls are automatically billed to your credit card each time you use Maryland’s facilities. It may be used on vehicles with 10 axles or less.
This account type requires vehicle information and valid credit card information for processing payment. When the customer’s license plate is read by an MDTA toll facility, the trip will be deducted using the license plate on file. The credit card on your Pay-By-Plate account will be charged.
Information needed to create a Pay-By-Plate account includes: First and Last Name, Vehicle License Plate Number and State, Vehicle Color, and Vehicle Year, Credit Card and an email address or phone number.
Yes. Pay-By-Plate requires a credit card or branded debit card for automatic payment.
If you want to establish an account that you can replenish by check, money order or cash, E-ZPass is the best option.
Alternatively, you can use Video Tolling, where you will receive a Notice of Toll Due (NOTD) in the mail. Video Tolls are billed at a higher toll rate.
No. Pay-By-Plate allows you to pay Maryland tolls electronically without mounting a transponder on your vehicle. You may have to 10 vehicles on a Pay-By-Plate account.
Pay-By-Plate only works at toll facilities in Maryland. If you use toll facilities in other states, you should pay cash or sign up for E-ZPass.

No statements of any kind are sent; however, you can access transaction and payment history by logging in to your account.
Keep in mind, E-ZPass remains the easiest and most economical way to pay tolls in Maryland. Save up to 77% by switching to E-ZPass.
If your credit card is declined, you will receive an email or text message with instructions on how to update your credit card information.
If you do not respond to the email or text message, an NOTD will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle and the tolls will be billed at the Video Toll rate.
We encourage you to add a backup payment method to your account in case your default payment method is declined.
There are three convenient ways to update your account information:
- Log in to your account
- Call 1-888-321-6824 and use the automated voice response system or speak with a Customer Service Representative during normal business hours
- Visit one of our Customer Service Centers
From time to time, you may need to update the credit card information that’s associated with your Pay-By-Plate account:
- Updated credit card expiration date
- New credit card
- Lost credit card
- New address associated with your credit card
Log in to your account to update your payment information. You may also visit one of our Customer Service Centers or call the Customer Information Center at 1-888-321-6824.
